Projects

Rename a project or change its URL

Change a project's display name, or the web address its pages have in the console.

A project has two names. Name is what everyone sees across the console, and changing it moves nothing. Web address is the part of the console's page addresses that names the project, and changing it breaks links that use the old one.

Admins and the account's Owners can change both.

Rename the project

Open the settings

Open the project, select Settings, then General.

Edit the name

Under Names, edit Name ("The project's display name across the console."). Names can be up to 100 characters.

Save

Select Save changes. Discard puts the field back.

The new name shows everywhere the project is listed. A rename is not announced to anyone, because nothing outside the console changes.

Change the web address

What a new address breaks

Bookmarks and links to the project's pages in the console, links in emails already sent, export download links already shared, and README badges all use the old address and stop working. Translations delivered through the CDN and the API keep working.

The old address is not held for you: another project in the workspace can take it later, and links that still use it would then lead to that project.

Edit the web address

On Settings, then General, under Names, edit Web address. Under the field, Web address after you save: shows the address the project will have.

Save

Select Save changes.

Confirm

The dialog Change this project's web address? shows the current and the new address and what stops working. Select Change address to save, or cancel to go back without saving anything.

The project opens at its new address straight away. Because a new address breaks links for other people too, the change is announced: the workspace's Admins and the account's Owners, including you, get an email and a console notification naming the old and the new address. The change is also added to the project's activity and recorded in the workspace audit log.

Address rules

A web address uses lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens only, up to 120 characters, and must be unique within the workspace. If you type anything else, the message under the field says so and, where it can, suggests an address that is allowed: for "My Website!" it suggests my-website.

If it doesn't work

  • "Use lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens only, for example my-website.": use the suggested address, or edit yours to match the rule.
  • "That web address is already used by another project in this workspace.": choose another address.
  • "Use 120 characters or fewer for the web address.": shorten it.
  • General is not offered under Settings: you are not an Admin of this workspace or an Owner of its account.
