Team and access

Change a teammate's role

Give a member a different role across the whole workspace, such as moving a translator to reviewer.

Who can do this: admins, the Owners of the account that holds the workspace, and members whose role includes Invite, re-role and remove members. The picker only offers roles that carry no more than you hold.

Find the person

Open Settings, choose the Workspace tab, then People. Find their row under Who reaches what.

Pick the new role

Choose the new role in the Role column: Admin, Developer, Reviewer, Translator or one of your custom roles.

Confirm

The confirmation asks "Change" followed by their name and the new role, describes the role, and adds "It applies straight away, and you can change it back." Select Change role.

What happens next

The change applies at once, and the message reads "Role updated." followed by their name and new role. The change is recorded in the workspace audit log. The person is emailed their previous and new role, and the workspace's other admins and the account Owners receive a security email about it.

A role is a set of permissions, not a step on a ladder. Moving someone from Developer to Reviewer takes away adding keys and running AI translation, and gives them approving. Moving them from Reviewer to Translator takes approving and assignment reviews away. Roles and what each one can do lists every permission.

To change what someone can do on one project only, use a project grant instead. See Grant access to one project.

Account Owners are not changed here

The Owners of the account are listed under Account Owners, with no role picker, because they reach the workspace through the account. Nobody is made an account Owner from People. Their access is changed on the account's Owners & billing members page. See Account Owners and Billing members.

If it doesn't work

  • The Role column shows a role but no picker: you cannot change that person's role.
  • The picker reads "A role this workspace no longer has": their custom role was deleted. Pick one that exists.
  • "You can only grant a role carrying capabilities you hold yourself": the role carries permissions you do not hold. Ask an admin or an account Owner.
  • The workspace is read-only, for example while it waits to be deleted: a change that only takes permissions away still goes through, and any other change is refused with the reason.
