Account Owners and Billing members

Decide who runs the account that pays for your workspaces, invite Owners and Billing members, and hand ownership to someone else.

Your workspaces belong to an account, and the account is what holds the plan, the card and the invoices. The people who manage an account have one of two roles on it, separate from any workspace role:

Account roleWhat it covers
Owner"Everything, including closing the account and inviting Owners. Takes a seat." An Owner reaches every workspace of the account with full control, and holds the four permissions no workspace role can have.
Billing"The plan, the card, invoices and company details. No access to workspaces."

Who can do this: account Owners. Billing members do not see the Owners & billing members page.

Open the page

Open Settings, choose the Account tab, then Owners & billing members. It lists:

  • People who manage this account: every Owner and Billing member, with their Role and when they were Added.
  • Waiting to accept: open invitations, with the inviter and when each expires.
  • Everyone with a seat: "One seat per person, counted once however many workspaces they reach.", with the workspaces each person reaches and when they were last active.

Invite an Owner or a Billing member

Start the invitation

Select Invite someone.

Enter the address and role

Enter the Email address and choose the Role on this account: Owner or Billing.

Send it

Select Send invitation. "They get an email with a link that works for seven days. The invitation is listed under Waiting to accept until they accept it or an Owner revokes it."

Sending a second invitation to the same address replaces its link, and the link in the earlier email stops working. To withdraw an invitation, select Revoke on its row.

Change someone's account role

Pick the new role in the person's Role column. The message confirms it, for example "Dana is now Owner on this account."

  • A person must confirm their email address before they can become an Owner. If they have not, transglot sends them a link: promote them again after they open it.
  • A person can own one Free account at a time, so someone who already owns a Free account cannot become an Owner of another Free account.
  • While a payment for the account has failed, new Owners are paused. An invitation as Billing still works, so someone can fix the payment.

Hand ownership to someone else

An account always needs at least one Owner. To pass the account on:

Make the new person an Owner

Invite them as an Owner, or change their existing role to Owner.

Wait until they have accepted

Their row must show them as an Owner under People who manage this account.

Step back yourself

Select Leave this account on your own row, or ask the new Owner to change you to Billing or remove you.

If you try to leave or step down as the last Owner, the page refuses: "needs at least one Owner. Make someone else an Owner first."

To move a single workspace to a different account rather than handing over the whole account, see Move a workspace to another account.

Remove an Owner or a Billing member

Select Remove on their row. The confirmation explains that they lose access to billing and to the implicit control of the account's workspaces, that workspaces where they are also a member keep that membership, and that pending invitations they sent are revoked.

The dialog also lists access the person created that keeps working after they leave (API tokens, webhooks, CDN keys, publishable keys and CMS connections), with when each was created and last used. Tick the items you want revoked at the same time. "Unchecked items keep working after" they leave.

Free a seat

Under Everyone with a seat, Remove from every workspace takes a person out of every workspace of the account at once. They keep their standing on the account, and anything they created keeps working. An Owner reaches every workspace through the account, so you change an Owner to Billing before you can free their seat.
