Words and usage
How transglot counts the words it translates and how that relates to your plan.
Your plan includes an allowance of AI translation each month. Usage is measured against that allowance, and what happens when you exceed it depends on whether usage-based billing is turned on for your account.
How words are counted
Usage is counted in source words, once for each target language a string is translated into. One hundred source words translated into five languages is five hundred words of usage.
Counting is script-aware: a language written without spaces, such as Japanese or Chinese, is measured on a basis that fits its script rather than by counting spaces.
What counts
Every word handed to Glossa counts, whatever it was sent for:
- Translation, whether automatic, from the editor or from the CLI.
- AI review of translations in a quality check.
- Repairs, when self-heal or source drift repair translates a failing string again.
- Brand voice drafts, when Glossa proposes a voice from your approved translations.
What does not count
- Reused translations. When the exact same source text has been translated before, transglot reuses that translation at no cost instead of translating it again. Your dashboard shows these as Words reused at $0.
- Anything your team writes by hand, imports or pushes from a file.
- Reading, filtering and approving, and the automatic checks.
- The scorecard, which is built from findings a quality check already produced.
Three settings move usage the most: Auto-translate translates new strings as they arrive, adding a language translates every key into it, and turning Translation memory off stops free reuse.
Allowances belong to the account
The words are the account's, shared by every workspace in it. The account's Usage page shows the words used this cycle against what the plan includes, and which workspaces used them. Only people with access to a whole workspace see its usage on the dashboard.
On the Free plan, the allowance is a hard limit: when it runs out, translation stops until the next cycle or until you upgrade. New Free accounts also receive a one-time grant of welcome words; see Create your account.
On paid plans, the account's Owners and billing members can turn on Usage-based overage on the Usage page. With it off, translation stops in every workspace of the account when the allowance runs out. With it on, translation continues and words above the allowance are charged at the overage rate, up to the Spend cap a cycle, in USD you set; at the cap, translation pauses.
