The glossary
Pin how your product's terms are translated, which words stay as written, and which must never appear.
The glossary is the project's list of terms with fixed rules: your product name that is never translated, a feature name with an approved wording in each language, a word you never want to see. Glossary terms are matched against source text and enforced during translation and during quality checks; a translation that departs from a glossary term is flagged.
Open the project and select Glossary in the sidebar. The glossary is included on Starter and above.
What a term can say
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| Wording per language | The exact wording a language must use for the term, such as Kasse in German for Checkout. Set it by importing a file or through the API. |
| Do not translate | The term stays exactly as written in every language, such as a brand or product name. It carries no wording. |
| Forbidden | The term must never appear in a translation, such as a retired product name. It carries no wording. |
| Case-sensitive | The term only matches with the same capitals, so Pro and pro are different terms. |
| Notes | Context for translators, such as what the term refers to. |
| Kind of word | The part of speech, such as noun. Set by import or the API. |
How terms are used
- During translation. When a string contains a term, the term travels with the request, so Glossa uses the wording you pinned.
- In the checks. The terminology check compares each translation with the glossary. See Quality checks.
- In the editor. The Glossary section of the editor's context panel lists the terms in the string you are on, with what each must become, so nobody has to remember the list.
Adding or changing a term does not retranslate what you already have. Run a quality check to find existing translations that conflict with it.
Enforcement
The Enforcement control on the Locked terms card sets how strictly the terminology check treats the glossary:
| Setting | A required term is missing | A forbidden term appears |
|---|---|---|
| Off | Not checked | Not checked |
| Warn (default) | Flagged for review | Fails the check |
| Enforce | Fails the check | Fails the check |
Owners and Admins can change it, here or in Settings → Checks.
The Glossary page
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Terms tab | Every approved term, under Locked terms, with a column per language for its wording. Filter by locale narrows the list to one language. |
| Review candidates tab | Terms an AI extraction proposed, waiting for approval. See Review extracted glossary terms. |
| Add term | Adds a term. See Add a glossary term. |
| Import CSV or TBX and Export | Bring terms in from a file, or download them. See Import and export a glossary. |
Everyone who can open the project can read the glossary. Owners, Admins and Developers can add, import, export and delete terms. If your access is limited to some languages, you can change wording in those languages only.
Delete a term
Select Delete on the term's row, then Delete term to confirm. The term stops being enforced from the next translation run. Wording already written into existing translations is left alone.
