Assign a language to a translator
Hand one or more languages to a translator or vendor as tracked work, with a due date and a brief, and open those languages to them.
An assignment is a work order: one language, one translator, a status that moves from assigned to approved, and a progress figure. Assigning also opens the language to the translator, so it is how you give a vendor or freelancer exactly the languages they work on and nothing else.
Admins and the account's Owners can assign work.
Before you start
The translator must already be a member of the workspace. To bring in someone new, invite them first; for an outside vendor, use a project-scoped invite as described in Onboard a vendor or freelancer. The project also needs at least one target language.
Assign the work
Open the project's assignments
In the project, select Review assignments in the navigation. The page is headed Assignments.
Choose the translator
Under Assign to translator, pick a person from Translator (it reads Choose a translator until you do).
Set a due date (optional)
Pick a date under Due date (optional).
Tick the languages
Tick each language to assign. Each language becomes its own assignment, tracked separately.
Write a brief (optional)
Under Brief (optional), add anything the translator should know: "Tone, deadlines, anything the translator should know."
Assign
Select Assign to translator. It stays unavailable until you have chosen a person and at least one language.
What happens next
- Each language appears under Work orders as Assigned, and a message confirms it: "Assigned de, fr to Ana."
- The translator is notified in the console and by email, and the work appears on their Assignments page. See Your assignments.
- The translator can now open and write in the assigned languages. For a member whose access is limited to this project, the assignment adds exactly those languages to their access and nothing more. Assigning never takes access away, and it never changes anyone's role.
The progress on each work order counts the language's approved strings against the project's keys, so it moves as reviewers approve the translator's work.
Review the work
When the translator selects Submit for review, you are notified, and the work order shows Submitted for review. Read the language in the editor and approve its strings (see Approve or flag a translation), then, on the work order:
- Approve signs off the work order. The confirmation says how many strings are not yet approved, if any: approving the work order does not approve them. "Approving is final: the work order cannot be reopened." The translator is told.
- Request changes opens Request changes to language. Describe "Which strings, and what is wrong with them.", then select Send request. The work order shows Changes requested and the translator is told.
Nobody can approve or send back a work order assigned to themselves.
If it doesn't work
- "Invite a translator to this workspace before assigning work.": there is nobody you can assign yet.
- "Add a target language before assigning a translator.": the project has no target language.
- "That member reviews this project. A reviewer cannot also be the assignee.": pick someone else, or change who reviews the project.
- "Account owners and admins already have full access.": Owners and Admins can already work in every language, so there is nothing to assign.
- "Ana already has an open assignment for de.": that language is already assigned to them and not yet approved. Other languages in the same request are still assigned.
- The Assign to translator form is not shown: you are not an Admin of this workspace or an Owner of its account.
