Quick answer
Compare Phrase, Lokalise, Crowdin, Weblate and Transglot against the work you need to replace. Preserve the archive, normalize cost and prove a complete release. Keep Smartling as the incumbent baseline.
A localization manager can replace a subscription and still inherit the same bottleneck. Files arrive without context. Review waits on the wrong person. A correction lands in the website but never reaches the translation memory. The monthly software bill falls, while the amount of coordination grows.
The most useful Smartling alternatives are therefore the ones that fit the operating model: Transglot for an internally owned software workflow, Phrase for a broader localization suite, Lokalise for product collaboration, Crowdin Enterprise for configurable content routing, and Weblate for teams that want a Git-centered platform with a deployment choice. These are editorial shortlists, not a ranking from comparative testing.
Quick answer: first identify which Smartling responsibilities must survive the move, then compare those responsibilities against each alternative's actual plan and integration behavior. A text translation endpoint is not a complete substitute for a managed localization program. A successful file import is not proof that a release can be reviewed, delivered and recovered.
This guide is published by Transglot and includes Transglot among the options. It draws on official documentation and public plan information checked on 5 November 2026. No authenticated vendor benchmark, translation-quality contest or firsthand implementation test was performed. The migration examples are proposed exercises; the vendor capabilities described below come from the linked primary sources.
Start with what Smartling is doing for you
Before looking outward, separate the platform from the service relationship. Smartling's current public plans page presents Core as a starting point for smaller document workflows and Enterprise as the option with customizable workflows, broader connectivity, advanced linguistic assets and bring-your-own-translator support. It also describes AI and human translation offerings. A replacement decision should name the exact combination in the current contract. Smartling plans.
There is a documentation discrepancy worth resolving before procurement. A Smartling help-center comparison still labels the plans Growth and Enterprise, while the commercial page uses Core and Enterprise. That does not prove what any existing customer is entitled to. It does mean that a buyer should ask Smartling to confirm the relevant package and permissions in writing rather than translate an older feature table into a current promise. Smartling help-center comparison.
Build an inventory of responsibilities, not just integrations. Who prepares source content? Who hires and pays linguists? Who resolves terminology disputes? Who checks a localized build? Who can stop publication? Who handles an urgent correction after launch? If Smartling or a service partner currently owns one of these tasks, moving to a self-managed platform requires a new owner.
For a hypothetical SaaS business, the product interface may be managed by engineering, campaign pages by marketing and billing language by a legal reviewer. Those streams need different acceptance rules. Putting all three into one automated route because the replacement offers a workflow builder would erase an important distinction.
The incumbent belongs in the pilot. A change is justified by a specific improvement in the actual workflow, such as eliminating an unnecessary handoff or making the current source revision visible to a reviewer. Existing terminology decisions, trained contributors and reliable integrations have value even when their value is absent from a subscription comparison.
Five Smartling alternatives and the work each should prove
The table is a starting shortlist. “Worth evaluating” expresses an editorial judgment about fit, not a guarantee of quality, savings or compatibility. Confirm the configuration and plan with each supplier.
| Alternative | Worth evaluating when | What the pilot should prove |
|---|---|---|
| Transglot | Product teams want to own a recurring software localization workflow | Real source files round-trip through review and the intended destination on an eligible plan |
| Phrase | Localization spans software, documents and multiple contributors | The chosen Strings/TMS configuration preserves assets and keeps reviewed memory authoritative |
| Lokalise | Product collaboration and changing translation content drive the process | Source updates, review and exports work with the selected workflow and usage allowance |
| Crowdin Enterprise | Content needs explicit routing across human, machine and vendor steps | The selected project type and integration mode move sources and approved targets as intended |
| Weblate | Git-centered localization and infrastructure ownership matter | Repository synchronization, review and operational recovery fit the team's maintenance practice |
A short list is better than an exhaustive directory when every candidate must complete the same demanding exercise. Start with the incumbent and two alternatives with different operating models. Add another only when neither candidate satisfies a required condition.
Do not score a missing requirement away. If a necessary file cannot survive import and export, or a required reviewer cannot see the context needed to approve it, a favorable average score is irrelevant. Treat these as gates before using weighted preferences such as editor convenience.

Transglot: evaluate an internally owned software workflow
Transglot is relevant when engineering and localization want to connect changing product strings to a repeatable review and delivery process. Its developer documentation covers a REST API, CLI, GitHub Action and signed webhooks. The same page distinguishes bidirectional connectors from import-only connectors; a connector's presence does not establish that a particular destination can be written back automatically. Inspect its card and exercise the actual route. Transglot developer workflow.
For this comparison, the important distinction is between technical validity and editorial acceptance. Transglot checks placeholders, plural forms, terminology and length. Its quality page also distinguishes off, suggest and apply repair modes: apply performs a corrective pass and rechecks, while suggest waits for a decision. None of these structural checks establishes that a refund promise means the right thing in the target language. Transglot quality checks and repair.
The pricing page offers a practical boundary for a trial. Browser file import is available on Free, while project-token surfaces including the API, CLI and GitHub Action start at Starter. At the check date, Starter displayed a $15 monthly launch rate against a $19 list rate, and Team displayed $39 against $49. The offer can change; confirm the rate at checkout. Transglot pricing.
A useful evaluation would import an approved source file, give a reviewer the relevant product context, change one source sentence and inspect the returned output. Include an unchanged reviewed translation in the sample so the team can check preservation alongside generation. This is a proposed test, not a claim that a migration from Smartling is a one-click operation.
Transglot's developer page names migration paths from several localization platforms but does not name Smartling in that list. Do not assume a dedicated Smartling connector, a lossless transfer of all Smartling metadata or automatic recreation of a managed service. Demonstrate the supported file and memory path with a representative export before planning a full move. Documented migration and developer surfaces.
Choose this route when the team wants to own the operating decisions and can supply the language judgment it needs. If the requirement is a fully managed linguist program, ask explicitly who will provide that service rather than treating the software subscription as its replacement.
Phrase: evaluate the suite and the memory policy together
Phrase is worth evaluating when software localization is one part of a wider program. Its public pricing distinguishes TMS seats, Strings seats and several product capacities rather than presenting one undifferentiated word allowance. The business Team plan displayed 20 Strings seats alongside unlimited TMS seats at the check date. Request the configuration that matches the work; a TMS seat and a Strings seat are not interchangeable labels. Phrase pricing.
Its translation-memory guidance offers a concrete operational lesson. Phrase recommends using a secondary working memory for output that has not earned trust and allowing reviewed work into the master memory at later workflow steps. That is a useful pattern to reproduce during migration: distinguish material that is merely present from material that is approved to be reused. Phrase translation-memory quality guidance.
A hypothetical pilot could use one help article and a set of related product strings. Put an approved term into the baseline, introduce a deliberately questionable draft in a test job, and follow both through review. The acceptance evidence should show which material can enter reusable memory, who can change that setting and what happens to a correction made outside the system.
Phrase's own guidance warns that edits made in a native file or CMS will not automatically be stored in the memory and may be overwritten. The procurement implication is practical: trace a correction from the final channel back to the reusable asset. “The CMS is connected” is insufficient evidence that every editorial correction completes that loop. Phrase guidance on edits outside the TMS.
Commercial evaluation also needs care. Phrase documents both capacity-based and credit-based plans. On credit-based plans, different capabilities draw from a prepaid pool at different rates; the documentation says stored Strings words and seats can consume credits daily, while TMS processing and AI activities use other measures. Ask which model the actual quote uses. Phrase credit-based pricing.
Phrase should stay on the shortlist when breadth and governance justify configuration work. The decision is less attractive if the team will purchase a broad suite but use only a small file exchange without the operational capacity to maintain its policies.
Lokalise: distinguish collaboration from consumption
Lokalise is worth evaluating for product teams whose translation work changes alongside development. Its pricing page offers several packages with different workflow and collaboration features. At the check date, annual-billing cards displayed Explorer at $149 per month, Growth at $379 and Advanced starting at $1,049. The same page places glossary and translation-memory capabilities in the Growth summary and branching/versioning in Advanced. Confirm the needed features and billing period in the quote. Lokalise plans.
The less obvious issue is the unit behind the allowance. Lokalise's processed-word documentation says paid plans can store unlimited hosted words, while applicable source and target updates consume processing capacity. Storage and work are different measures. An initial import, a source revision or a retranslation can matter even when the number of stored keys hardly changes. Lokalise processed-word rules.
Use a small migration sample that includes repeated content and an intentionally changed source. Inspect the usage screen before and after the operations. Do not extrapolate from the uploaded source count alone, and keep AI-specific allowances separate from general processing. This pilot is designed to reveal the meter, not to establish an expected invoice.
The same documentation distinguishes an unchanged reimport of existing key-value content from deleting and recreating a key; the latter is treated as new content. That makes key stability a cost and migration concern as well as an engineering concern. Avoid a cleanup script that destroys identity merely to produce tidy files. Lokalise import and recreation rules.
For collaboration, ask a real reviewer to work on a difficult screen. A manager's successful import does not prove that a linguist can distinguish a title from a button, identify the current source or explain a disputed term. Record the questions that require leaving the editor and the person who must answer them.
Lokalise belongs on the shortlist when product collaboration solves a current bottleneck and the selected package supports the required route. Obtain a usage model for normal change volume and a release spike, rather than treating unlimited storage as unlimited localization activity.
Crowdin Enterprise: prove the route, not just the workflow drawing
Crowdin Enterprise documents configurable workflows with sequential or parallel steps, including source review, human translation, proofreading and vendor participation. These are relevant when different kinds of content need explicit routing. Evaluate the Enterprise configuration that is actually being offered; do not assume that every feature described in Enterprise documentation applies to a different Crowdin product or subscription. Crowdin Enterprise workflow overview.
The important implementation detail is upstream. Crowdin's GitHub documentation distinguishes source-and-translation file synchronization from target-file-bundle delivery. Bundle mode pushes generated targets without importing repository sources, and string-based projects use that bundle mode. A team expecting source changes in Git to appear automatically could select a real integration and still choose the wrong operating mode. Crowdin GitHub integration.
Test both directions independently. Change a source in its authoritative location, observe what arrives in the project, review a target and inspect the returned pull request or output. If the design deliberately keeps source authoring in the platform, record that decision and stop promising the repository as the source of truth.
For a hypothetical program with agency translators and internal product reviewers, use one content type per route in the pilot. Include a sentence that should be held for an internal decision. The evidence should show where it waits and who can advance it. A visually plausible workflow does not prove that the right contributors have been assigned.
Crowdin Enterprise is a strong candidate to investigate when content orchestration is the problem. Keep the comparison focused on the necessary routes, permissions and integration behavior. The number of available steps is less useful than a complete, recoverable handoff.
Weblate: control comes with operating responsibilities
Weblate offers hosted and self-hosted deployment choices. Its hosting page explains that hosted-string capacity includes the source and every target language, and that external translation or AI providers may charge separately. Count the actual units before comparing it with a word-processing allowance elsewhere. Weblate hosting and capacity.
A Git-centered workflow is valuable only if it fits the team's merge practices. Weblate's continuous-localization documentation explains how concurrent changes inside and outside Weblate can create conflicts. It also describes how squash merging can complicate synchronization when Weblate retains commits whose identities no longer exist upstream. Review this with the engineering team before adopting the ordinary application-repository policy unchanged. Weblate continuous localization.
A useful pilot includes a translation change and a source-file change close together, followed by the team's intended review and merge process. Confirm that the next synchronization succeeds and that pending translations survive. Test the documented recovery approach on disposable pilot content; do not discover the difference between keeping pending translations and discarding local work during a real launch.
Memory scope is another decision. Weblate documents personal, project, workspace and shared memory behaviors. The scope affects which other work can contribute suggestions and who can access the reused material. During evaluation, use harmless sample content to check the scope rather than assuming that installing the application makes all imported memory private to one project. Weblate memory scopes.
Self-hosting can satisfy an infrastructure preference, but it assigns work to an operator: upgrades, backups, restore drills, monitoring and integration maintenance. Include that labor in the comparison. A zero software-license line is not the same thing as zero operating cost, and hosted deployment still needs a person responsible for the localization process.

Conceptual Transglot editorial artwork · Plan your migration ↗
Export meaning and evidence, not just translated text
Smartling's memory export illustrates why a migration needs more than a format checkbox. Its current management documentation describes a standard export of the latest variant, an option to include metadata with the latest variant, and an option to include all variants without metadata. The metadata and all-variants options cannot be selected together. Smartling memory export options.
The implication is that one file may not preserve every dimension the receiving system needs. A migration plan may require separately retained evidence for provenance and contextual variants. Whether the destination can represent that information remains a question for the pilot; export availability does not establish import equivalence.
Consider a hypothetical English word “Open” that appears as a command and as a status. Both source strings may be identical while requiring different target wording. A destination that collapses them into one reusable unit could make the migration appear successful by record count while damaging meaning. Use examples that expose this problem rather than only long, unique sentences.
| Asset or decision | Evidence to retain | Acceptance check |
|---|---|---|
| Source and targets | Stable identifiers, locale mapping and representative files | Import and export retain the intended identity and message structure |
| Memory | Export scope, variants and available provenance | Context-sensitive examples remain distinguishable |
| Terminology | Approved and forbidden terms with usage notes | A reviewer can explain how a term affects a real sentence |
| Review | Current source revision, acceptance policy and responsible person | A changed source cannot silently inherit a stale decision in the proposed release process |
| Delivery | Destination mapping and last accepted version | A tested output reaches the intended channel |
| Recovery | Previous files, configuration and ownership | A deliberate rollback restores the selected pilot baseline |
Retain an immutable export snapshot before transformations and a mapping file explaining every conversion. A tidy target project is easier to inspect when the team can trace each sample back to its original identity. Record exclusions explicitly: historical comments, workflow events and service records may need a separate archive rather than a forced import.
Read the unit behind the price
There is no honest universal “cheaper than Smartling” calculation without the incumbent scope and a matched quote. Smartling says pricing depends on translation type, volume and workflow automation. Include linguist and management services alongside software if they are part of what is being replaced. Smartling pricing explanation.
The useful comparison is total work over a defined period. Separate platform fees, translation or AI consumption, human review, integration maintenance, migration effort and parallel-running costs. Keep one-off costs separate from recurring ones so a first-year estimate does not masquerade as a steady-state estimate.
For a fictional example, suppose the current platform costs $900 per month and an alternative $500. The subscription difference is $4,800 over twelve months. If the migration needs 40 hours at an assumed $80 per hour, the first-year difference falls to $1,600 before usage, ongoing coordination, services, tax or risk. These numbers are hypothetical inputs, not quotes or a savings forecast.
Transglot's current billing explanation counts source words sent to its engine once per target language, including applicable quality checks, brand-voice drafts and repairs; exact memory reuse costs no allowance. A workload estimate based only on the first generation can miss subsequent activity. Transglot usage definition.
Phrase credit-based plans, Lokalise processed words and Weblate hosted strings describe different kinds of consumption. Do not place their allowance numbers in one column and rank the largest as the best value. Ask each supplier to price the same sequence: initial migration, unchanged reimport, source revision, review, retranslation and delivery. Phrase credits · Lokalise processing · Weblate hosted strings.

Run a reversible pilot before choosing a platform
Use one representative slice of the product rather than the easiest file. A proposed sample might combine onboarding, a billing message, an error state and a help article, translated into languages chosen to expose the team's actual format and review needs. The sample size should follow the decision, not a ceremonial benchmark number.
Give the same approved baseline, context and terminology to each candidate. Keep a separate challenge set containing a source revision after review, a contextual duplicate, a plural message, a protected placeholder and a destination mismatch. Mark deliberately broken test content clearly so it cannot be mistaken for approved production material.
| Pilot stage | Collect this evidence | Hold the decision if |
|---|---|---|
| Import | Identifier and locale mapping, parser findings | Content disappears or identity changes without explanation |
| Review | Context available, questions raised and resolution owner | The reviewer cannot judge the intended use |
| Source change | Old and new revision with the resulting review decision | Previously accepted wording is treated as current without reassessment |
| Delivery | Exact accepted output at the intended destination | A draft or wrong locale can enter the release |
| Recovery | Restored baseline and a successful next synchronization | The return path loses work or leaves systems diverged |
| Commercial check | The activity sequence reconciled with usage and quote | Capacity assumptions cannot be explained |
Measure what the team actually observes: time spent resolving context, manual handoffs, failed imports and the number of corrections that need work outside the system. Do not convert those pilot observations into a universal accuracy claim. A reviewer who likes one language pair does not establish performance for every language or content type.
Before the decision, export the candidate's pilot assets too. Portability is not only a question for the incumbent. The next platform should allow a future operator to recover the accepted work and understand how it was delivered.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best Smartling alternative for a software team?
The best shortlist depends on who owns localization. Evaluate Transglot for an internally managed software workflow, Lokalise for product collaboration, Phrase for a broader suite, Crowdin Enterprise for explicit routing and Weblate for Git-centered operating control. These are editorial starting points. Choose after the same source, review, delivery and recovery exercise, not from a universal ranking.
Is a translation API a full replacement for Smartling?
Only if the remaining responsibilities are provided elsewhere. An endpoint can generate translated text, but the organization still needs source preparation, context, linguistic judgment, contributor management, release acceptance and correction handling. Map the services in the current contract before deciding what the API project must supply.
Can Smartling translation memory be exported?
Yes. Smartling documents TMX export with different choices for the latest variant, additional metadata or all variants. Its documentation says additional metadata and all variants cannot be selected together. Inspect representative exports and test the receiving system's behavior before assuming a lossless migration. Smartling memory management.
Which alternative is cheapest?
A comparable quote is needed. Software subscriptions, processing, AI activity, human services and internal labor may be charged or absorbed differently. A lower entry price does not prove a lower cost for the same accepted and delivered work. Use a defined activity sequence and include migration and parallel-running costs.
Can a team keep its existing translators?
Confirm contributor access and the service arrangement in the proposed plan. Preserving a linguist relationship is different from recreating permissions, task routing, payment arrangements or terminology governance. Ask a real contributor to complete the pilot so these dependencies become visible before cutover.
Does translation memory preserve approval automatically?
Do not assume that it does. A reusable translation and a recorded review decision are different kinds of information. Phrase's guidance recommends protecting master memory with an appropriate review policy; a destination still needs its own mapping of trust, context and ownership. Phrase memory quality.
Is self-hosted Weblate free to operate?
Its deployment options include self-hosting, but infrastructure and operational labor remain. Budget for upgrades, backups, recovery and integration work, and account for any external translation or AI charges. Use the hosting and support comparison to decide which responsibilities the team actually wants to own. Weblate hosting.
How should a team decide whether to switch?
First establish gates for required formats, review context, delivery, recovery and acceptable commercial terms. Then compare the candidates that pass, including the incumbent. Switch when a documented improvement in the team's real workflow justifies the migration effort and a reversible pilot has proved the critical handoffs.

Verdict: replace the operating model deliberately
The strongest Smartling alternative is the one that preserves the work already done well and makes a specific constraint easier to manage. Keep Smartling in the comparison when its service relationship, context or established process is doing valuable work. A platform change should have a clearer justification than a smaller starting price.
For product-led teams that want to own recurring software localization, Transglot is a sensible candidate to test. Phrase, Lokalise, Crowdin Enterprise and Weblate offer different reasons to investigate them. The useful next step is one representative, reversible release with written acceptance conditions.
Choose the operating model first. Prove that assets retain their meaning, reviewers can make informed decisions, the intended output reaches the intended place and the team can recover. Then negotiate a price for that exact work.
